Its been approximately three weeks since the start of the blazing and catastrophic fires engulfing on the Amazon rain-forest, and it doesn't seem like it will stop anytime soon.
It is crazy to think that myself (and I'm sure a lot of you) have just caught on to the heart breaking news happening right now in the Amazon. If you aren't aware of it by now, you must be living under a rock because this news is taking all social media handles by storm. As to why the world, ie America, is now hearing about this is neither here or there, but with this newfound information your first thought must be: How has it gotten so bad? How did this start? and Why hasn't anything been done to stop it?
You would think that the Amazon rain-forest, being that "rain" is included in its description but you (*cough cough* We) couldn't be more wrong. During the months of July and August the Amazon undergoes its driest months, so its safe to say that nature is the cause of all the chaos...wrong again! I've read in more blog and news posts alone that fire has been utilized to often to clear out land for farming and that this could be the cause of the relentless fires overtaking the "lungs of the planet" otherwise known as the Amazon.
You would think we are safe in our little corner of the world, but that couldn't be any more far from the truth. The effects that these fires are causing rests not only in the affected countries but in our world as a whole. The rain-forest is calculated to provide the world 20% of the planets oxygen...if you haven't been in math class for a while that's a shit ton of clean air that we need to survive and breathe freely. Not only is our air quality being threatened, and the ecosystems of such a bio-diverse magnificent jungle, but think about how this is affecting those innocent individuals of the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Rondonia, Para, and Mato Grosso.
What Can We Do
Its really hard to see a part of our beautiful world being taken advantage of and not really knowing what to do to help stop it. So I did some research and found an amazing post going into more depth about information of the forest fires. Not only do they give you all the know you need, but they also include an extensive list on what YOU can do to aid in protecting the Amazon rain-forest. Check it out!
